HERTFORDSHIRE COUNSELLOR

WHERE TO BEGIN...
Taking the first steps towards counselling can feel daunting - and that's completely understandable. There's no right or wrong reason to reach out and you don't need to have everything figured out.
Whether you're in the middle of something painful, carrying something you've held for a long time or simply sensing something needs to change - this ii a space for you.
Below you will find everything you need to know about what to expect when you first get in touch.
YOUR FIRST SESSION
When You First Get in Touch
I offer a brief initial telephone call - to get a sense of what you're looking for, check that it falls within what I offer and confirm I have availability at times that suit you. If we both feel we'd like to continue the conversation, we can then arrange a free 30-minute consultation call. This is a chance to ask questions, get a sense of what it might be like to work together, understand more about counselling and explore whether this feels like the right time and whether I might be the right person to support you. There is no charge for either of these calls and no obligation to continue.
If we decide to move forward together, I will email a working agreement outlining our confidentiality policy (including its limits) for you to read and sign before we begin our sessions. This ensures that both of us are clear about the boundaries and expectations as we work together.
Your First Full Session
It’s completely natural to feel uncertain or a little anxious about your first counselling session. During this time, we’ll take things at your pace. We’ll review the working agreement together to ensure everything feels clear and comfortable, and begin exploring what has brought you to therapy. This is also a space to talk about any expectations, needs, or hopes you may have for our work together.
There’s no pressure to have all the answers - therapy is a process and we’ll shape it together. I also offer regular reviews, usually every 4 to 6 weeks, to check in on how things are going and whether you feel it’s helpful to continue. My aim is to create a supportive and trusting space where you feel heard, understood and gently supported as you move forward in whatever way feels right for you.
